Summerside to host 2022 Fred Page Cup

SUMMERSIDE, PE (December 1, 2020) – Today the Canadian Junior “A” Hockey League (CJHL) confirmed that the City of Summerside, PEI and the Summerside Western Capitals will play host to the storied Fred Page Cup in 2022. This evening members of the bid committee were on-hand to officially announce the eastern Canadian Junior “A” Championship is coming to Summerside.

“The Fred Page Cup is extremely sought-after and will be the first time our great City will play host to the event,” mentioned Mayor Basil Stewart. “This event carries close to $1.4M in economic activity during the shoulder season which is fantastic for the local tourism sector.”

Each year 37 teams across 3 CJHL leagues compete to make their way to the Fred Page Cup. The Eastern Canadian Championship is comprised of four teams that include champions from the Maritime Hockey League, Central Canada Hockey League, Quebec Junior Hockey League and in 2022 our Summerside Western Capitals as the host team. The annual Fred Page Cup winner will move on to represent eastern Canada at the National Junior “A Championship, The Centennial Cup.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has certainly changed the business of event hosting, however todays announcement is an example that our SETS division continuing to work diligently in securing events for Summerside beyond the pandemic” commented JP Desrosiers, Director of Community Services. “This is yet another indication that our Sport and Entertainment Tourism Summerside (SETS) brand and strategy continues to thrive and attract large scale sporting events for Summerside.”

Summerside has a 40-year history of hosting national and international events and its commitment to sport tourism represents $16 million in annual economic activity in the city. Credit Union Place has been a main stay in hosting over the last decade and has played host to countless national and international events, concerts, trade shows and more and will be a key element to a successful 2022 Fred Page Cup.
