Former Summerside Western Capitals defenseman Chris McQuaid was presented with the 2020-21 Bob Boucher Hockey Assistance Fund (BBHAF) Scholarship during a ceremony before our game on December 2nd in Amherst stadium. On hand to make the presentation to McQuaid were BBHAF board members Rick Fraughton and Chuck LeCain, as well as Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) President Steve Dykeman.
As the coach of the Saint Mary’s intercollegiate hockey team for 13 years, the late Bob Boucher compiled an astounding record of 231 wins, 33 losses and 4 ties. His Huskies won seven consecutive AUS titles and went to the nationals 10 of his 13 years as head coach. He worked as a coach and executive at many levels, ranging from Nova Scotia Intermediate to the NHL over the course of his long career. A number of his former players have established the BBHAF Scholarship, to support students within the game who have displayed exceptional scholastic achievements. The group has partnered with the MHL for seven seasons and counting.
McQuaid played 23 games for the Summerside Western Capitals last season, with two goals and twelve assists. He enrolled in a Bachelor of Business Administration program at UPEI in September 2018, where he held a 4.3 grade-point average at the end of the last school year. McQuaid was named Academic Player of the Month several times across his various teams in the QMJHL and was Gatineau’s finalist for the Marcel-Robert Trophy during the 2018-19 season for the QMJHL’s Scholastic Player of the Year. He was also a key contributor in the community, even during the COVID-19 pandemic, helping teach younger players, and volunteering in and around the Summerside area. The Caps and MHL congratulates McQuaid on winning the Bob Boucher Hockey Assistance Fund Scholarship for the 2020-21 season.
