Caps, Timberwolves' series heating up SUMMERSIDE - It was a good old-fashioned playoff hockey game!
The Summerside Western Capitals doubled the Miramichi Timberwolves 4-2 on
Sunday night to even the Maritime Junior 'A' Hockey League's best-of-seven
Roger Meek Division semifinal series 1-1. Miramichi won the opener 1-0
Saturday.
"In Game 1, we got the one bounce that counted and tonight they got some
bounces and we didn't produce on our power play," assessed Timberwolves
general manager and head coach Billy McGuigan, whose team went 1-for-6 with
the man advantage. "It was a good hockey game."
Before 880 fans at Credit Union Place, the Capitals ran into delayed
penalties and killed off a 5-on-3 Miramichi power play - thanks to clutch
goaltending by Paul Dorsey and a valiant penalty-killing effort - that
lasted over three minutes early in the second period. Then, shortly after
returning to even strength, the Caps struck for back-to-back power-play
goals and a 4-1 lead.
"Miramichi is a great team and we can't give them those opportunities
because they will take advantage of them," said Dwyer. "But I liked the way
our team played today, and the pressure is squarely on Miramichi."
McGuigan doesn't agree.
"They (Caps) went public and said they were underdogs," said McGuigan. "We
don't believe that.
"We think we're two equal teams, and in the regular season we played a
little better. We have 17 guys who weren't on our hockey team last year.
They have nine guys who went to a Royal Bank Cup. This is going to be a good
series. . ."
The intensity-filled Game 2 featured solid hits and both teams played with
an edge.
The Capitals' Steven Brazil (11:07) and Timberwolves' Tyson Donovan (13:23)
exchanged first-period goals.
Cole MacMillan banged home a rebound at 7:36 of the second period to give
the Caps a 2-1 advantage. Then just 18 seconds after assistant coaches
Mitchell Jollimore of the Caps and Allan Menzies of the Timberwolves engaged
in a spirited shouting match at the end of the benches, Chad Earle scored a
power-play goal to make it 3-1. Neil Sherren connected again with the man
advantage at 16:25 to give the Caps a three-goal cushion, but Kyle
Lampenskie's power-play marker at 18:09 brought the Timberwolves to within
4-2 before the second intermission.
Overall, the Caps outshot the Timberwolves 36-32.
Darcy Ashley (2), Jason Cameron, Jason Gallant, Nathan DesRoches, Parker
Deighan and Trevor Carmichael picked up single assists for the Caps, who
were 2-for-6 with the man advantage.
Goaltender Chris Holden, Marshall Ellis and Kris Keating assisted for
Miramichi.
