Caps Split Weekend GamesMonday, March 1st 2010Caps split weekend games The Journal Pioneer SUMMERSIDE - The Summerside Western Capitals worked a little overtime and then some in back-to-back Maritime Junior 'A' Hockey League games over the weekend. After defeating the Dieppe Commandos 2-1 in a shootout on Saturday night, the Capitals dropped a 3-2 shootout decision to the Miramichi Timberwolves in a playoff preview on home ice Sunday afternoon. The Capitals and Timberwolves open the best-of-seven Roger Meek Division semifinal series in Miramichi, N.B., on Saturday night, with Game 2 back in Summerside on Sunday at 6 p.m. The Capitals will close out the regular season at Credit Union Place tonight, when they host the Halifax Lions in a make-up contest. The opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. Advance tickets purchased for this game will be honoured. Timberwolves 3 Capitals 2 Before 709 fans at Credit Union Place, the Timberwolves' Kyle Lampenskie and Chris Owens beat Capitals goaltender Paul Dorsey in the shootout. Meanwhile, the Capitals' Nathan DesRoches and Chad Earle were unable to score on Miramichi goaltender Chris Holden. The Capitals (26-20-1-2) received back-to-back power-play goals from Ned O'Brien at 14:51 and Parker Deighan at 19:29 to overcome a 2-0 deficit and force overtime. Earle (2), DesRoches and Darcy Ashley helped set up the goals. Jesse MacIntyre of Mill River scored both goals for the Timberwolves (34-14-1-0). He opened the scoring with a short-handed effort at 18:39 of the first period, and scored a power-play goal with five seconds left in the middle frame to send the Timberwolves into the second intermission up 2-0. The final shots-on-goal totals were 37-26 in favour of the Caps, who held a 15-6 advantage in the third period. Capitals 2 Commandos 1 Before 525 fans at the Arthur J. LeBlanc Arena, DesRoches and Earle scored for the Capitals in the shootout while the Commandos' Andrew Taylor and Dillen Theriault were unable to beat Dorsey. Adam Cann opened the scoring for the Commandos at 2:25 of the second period. Harrison McIver, assisted by Deighan and Matt Myers, pulled the Caps even less than two minutes later at 3:38. Overall, the Capitals outshot the Commandos 35-29. Dieppe will face the Woodstock Slammers in the other Meek Division semifinal. |
