Slammers Top CapitalsTuesday, February 16th 2010 The Journal Pioneer SUMMERSIDE - The Woodstock Slammers completed a regular-season sweep of the Summerside Western Capitals in the Maritime Junior 'A' Hockey League on Monday. Two power-play goals proved to be the difference as Woodstock downed the Capitals 5-3 en route to going 6-0 (won-lost) against Summerside this season. In other weekend action, the Capitals doubled the Campbellton Tigers 6-3 on Sunday evening and lost 5-1 to the Truro Bearcats on Saturday. Before 818 fans at Credit Union Place, Lucas McKinley (2-1), Nick Huard (1-2), Brogan Bailey (1-1) and Robert Zandbeek scored for Woodstock (43-3-0-1). Will Johnston (1-1), Nathan DesRoches (1-1) and Chad Earle answered for the Capitals (24-18-1-1). Woodstock, which held a 33-27 shots-on-goal advantage, held period leads of 2-1 and 4-2. Andre Guay was the winning goaltender, and Paul Dorsey took the loss. During a pre-game ceremony, the Capitals unveiled four championship banners from last season - MJAHL regular-season, Roger Meek Division, MJAHL playoff and Fred Page Cup Eastern Canadian junior 'A' championships. Capitals 6 Tigers 3 Before 697 fans in Summerside, the line of Harrison McIver, Trevor Carmichael and Darcy Ashley combined for 10 points. McIver scored a hat trick, Ashley had one goal and three assists and Carmichael added three helpers. Matt Myers and Neil Sherren also scored for the Capitals while Jake Guindon (1-1), John Ryan Francis of Charlottetown and Jason Smallman of O'Leary replied for the Tigers. The Capitals outshot the Tigers 57-24. Alexander Micalef earned the goaltending win, and Sam Renault made 51 saves for Campbellton (6-34-3-2). Bearcats 5 Capitals 1 Before 630 fans in Truro, N.S., the Bearcats scored three unanswered third-period goals to break open a close game. Dana Fraser (3-1), Cole Hawes and Yuri Cheremetiev scored for Truro (33-6-3-3). Cole MacMillan had the Caps' lone goal. The score was tied 1-1 after the opening period, and the Bearcats led 2-1 after 40 minutes. Truro oushot the Caps 42-27. Kirk Rafuse earned the goaltending win over Dorsey. |
