The Summerside Western Capitals spread out its offence in a 5-2 victory over the Amherst Ramblers on Sunday afternoon.
The Capitals received at least one point from 11 different players while moving into a second-place tie with Miramichi in the Roger Meek Division of the Maritime Junior 'A' Hockey League. Both teams are 16-11-0-0 (won-lost-overtime losses-shootout losses) going into a head-to-head meeting in Miramichi on Wednesday night.
"We haven't been playing a lot of games lately, and it was good for the guys to get into a bit of a rhythm," said Capitals assistant coach Mitchell Jollimore. "We have a big game Wednesday night and we have a long Christmas layoff coming up."
Before 619 fans at Credit Union Place, Cole MacMillan's second-period goal at 6:57 of the second period broke a 2-2 tie and stood up as the game-winner.
"It was a pretty lucky goal," said a smiling MacMillan. "I was behind the net and meant to throw it out front to (Nathan) DesRoches and it just banked in."
Chad Earle made it 4-2 at 12:37 of the third period, and Trevor Carmichael finished off a perfectly-executed two-on-one with Ned O'Brien for a power-play goal at 19:43.
O'Brien and DesRoches each had a goal and an assist for the Capitals, who outshot the Ramblers 49-29. Caps goaltender Paul Dorsey earned his 12th win of the season.
Eric Boudreau and Jeremy Barron replied for the Ramblers (11-17-1-1), who have lost six games in a row and nine of their last 10.
Jon Waye was in goal for Amherst, which killed one of four Capitals' power plays.
Steve Brazil (2), Robert McEwan, Richard Greer, Parker Deighan, Neil Sherren and Lance Pridham added assists for the Capitals.
