Caps hang on for win over TigresMonday, November 16th 2009 SUMMERSIDE -- It probably shouldn't have been this close.
The Summerside Western Capitals built a 4-0 third-period lead, and then pulled out a 5-4 victory over the Campbellton Tigers on Sunday afternoon.
"It was good to get out of there with a win," said Capitals head coach Gordie Dwyer. "Campbellton played well the entire game."
The win moved the Capitals (12-9-0-0) into a second-place tie with Miramichi (12-7-0-0) in the Maritime Junior 'A' Hockey League's Roger Meek Division.
"We are building and we have to remember that we are a young team," said Dwyer.
Before 701 fans at Credit Union Place, Ned O'Brien's goal 48 seconds into the final frame gave the Caps a seemingly comfortable 4-0 lead. But a power-play goal by Jared Hicks (6:24) and even-strength markers by Zeth Zielinski (10:02) and Jason Smallman of O'Leary (10:54) brought the Tigers to within 4-3.
"There are lessons to be learned (from this game), and we have to play 60 minutes," said Dwyer.
The Caps' forward line of Chad Earle, Will Johnston and Darcy Ashley hemmed the Tigers in their own zone, and was finally rewarded for their work at 12:40 of the third period. Johnston deposited a rebound off a point shot from Neil Sherren to make it 5-3.
However, the Tigers refused to go quietly and rookie Zack Evans-Renaud of St. Peters Bay blasted a shot through traffic from the right point for a power-play goal at 17:23 to bring the Tigers to within 5-4.
Caps goaltender Paul Dorsey preserved the win with a point-blank save off Smallman with 1:18 left.
Parker Deighan (1-1), Steve Brazil (1-1) and Jason Cameron also scored for the Capitals, who edged the Amherst Ramblers 3-1 on Friday night in the opener of a weekend home doubleheader.
Nathan DesRoches contributed three assists and Darcy Ashley had two helpers. Singles were credited to Johnston, Sherren and Matt Myers.
Jake Guindon (2), Nicholas Cyr (2), Smallman, Brett Bernard and Derek Larade picked up helpers for the Tigers (2-14-2-1).
Brazil opened the game's scoring at 10:02 of the first period, and the score remained that way until Cameron (9:48) and Deighan (11:38) struck for two quick goals in the second period to make it a 3-0 game following 40 minutes.
Overall, the Tigers outshot the Capitals 42-35. John Hillier was the losing goaltender.
Referee Mike Annear called seven minors and one fighting major against the Capitals. The Tigers were whistled for six minors and one fighting major.
The Capitals are back in action Friday, when they visit the Bridgewater Lumberjacks. The Caps' next home game is Sunday against the Yarmouth Mariners. Game time is 2 p.m. |
