SUMMERSIDE — The Summerside Western Capitals killed off all seven Amherst Ramblers’ power plays and received a 34-save effort from goaltender Paul Dorsey in a 3-1 victory Friday night.
The Maritime Junior ‘A’ Hockey League game was played at Credit Union Place.
The win moved the Capitals (11-9-0-0) into a second-place tie with Miramichi (11-7-0-0) in the Roger Meek Division. Amherst fell to 9-9-0-1.
After the Caps’ Will Johnston (7:43) and Amherst’s Scott Bragg (9:34) exchanged first-period goals, Chad Earle (1-1) scored what proved to be the winning goal at 11:45 of the second period. The score remained 2-1 Caps until rookie Jason Cameron (1-1) added an insurance marker with 3:41 left in regulation time.
Dorsey helped protect the lead by stopping all 23 shots he faced over the final two periods, including 13 in the middle frame.
The Caps, who failed to score on their two power plays, directed 28 shots at Ramblers goaltender Jon Waye.
Nathan DesRoches, Darcy Ashley, Robert McEwan and Ned O’Brien added assists for the Caps.
The Capitals were assessed seven minors, two fighting majors and one 10-minute misconduct. The Ramblers picked up two minors and two fighting majors. Both fights took place in the game’s first four seconds.
The three stars were:
1. Paul Dorsey (Caps), 2. Chad Earle (Caps), 3. Jason Cameron (Caps).
The Capitals host the Campbellton Tigers on Sunday at 2 p.m.
