SUMMERSIDE – The Summerside Western Capitals are getting back in the swing of things in the Maritime Junior ‘A’ Hockey League.
The Capitals will play three games over a five-day period, including contests at Credit Union Place in Summerside against the Amherst Ramblers on Friday at 8 p.m., and the Campbellton Tigers on Sunday. Fans are asked to note that the start times for Capitals’ Sunday home games have switched back to 2 p.m.
“We’re excited to get back at it,” said Capitals head coach Gordie Dwyer. “We’ve been off for a little while, but it's come at a good time.
“We’ve had some injuries and we’ve had the flu run through our hockey team. It will be nice to... get back to a regular schedule playing games and practising.”
The Capitals’ 4-2 loss in Dieppe Wednesday marked the team’s second game in 17 days.
“Hopefully, the break gave the guys an opportunity to get away from the rink, recharge, refocus and get ready for the stretch before Christmas,” said Dwyer.

Co-captains
Dwyer announced that third-year forwards Trevor Carmichael of Albany and Harrison McIver of Newton have been named co-captains. Veteran defenceman Daniel Whelan is an assistant captain.
“(Carmichael and McIver) are both well deserving of the captaincy, one not more than the other,” said Dwyer. “They’re both true Summerside Western Caps. They’ve been here, they’ve been through it and are great examples of what I’m looking for.
“They’re great players, they lead by example, their fitness level is high and they’re character guys. That’s important for me as a coach to have those kind of guys.”

Ramblers
Amherst, which sits third in the Maurice Bent Division, comes to Summerside with a 9-8-0-1 (won-lost-overtime losses-shootout losses) record. In the lone meeting between the two teams this season, the Ramblers pulled out a 2-1 win in Amherst on Oct. 9.
“Amherst is a good team and has been playing well recently,” said Dwyer. “They beat Truro the other night and they had a slow start to their season, but they are coming on right now. It’s going to be a good contest for us for sure.”
The rebuilding Tigers are in the Roger Meek Division’s basement at 2-12-2-1.
“(The Tigers) don’t necessarily have the wins to show for their efforts, but they’re a gritty team,” said Dwyer. “They have some guys that like to mix it up.
“They have guys that are going to play hard and they have some skill up front as well. It’s always a tough game against Campbellton.”
