Caps beat one of MJAHL’s top teamsSunday, October 25th 2009 Caps beat one of MJAHL’s top teams JASON SIMMONDS The Journal Pioneer SUMMERSIDE — It’s no secret the Summerside Western Capitals can score goals with any team, but they made a huge statement defensively Friday night. The Capitals registered a well-deserved 4-2 victory in handing the Truro Bearcats their first regulation-time loss of the Maritime Junior ‘A’ Hockey League regular season. “We played a great game offensively and defensively,” said Capitals goaltender Paul Dorsey, who was named the first star with a 30-save effort. “We haven’t been great lately, and it (win against Truro) gives the boys lots of confidence that we can play with the best teams in the league.” The Capitals, who have scored a league-high 83 goals, improved to 10-6-0-0 (won-lost-overtime losses-shootout losses), and sit five points behind the league-leading Woodstock Slammers (12-0-0-1). Woodstock visits the Capitals on Sunday at 4 p.m. Myers nets winner Before an announced crowd of 822 fans, rookie Matt Myers’ power-play goal at 16:23 of the second period gave the Caps a 3-1 lead and stood up as the game-winner. “There was a shot from the point, I went hard to the net and the puck came free, (I) kicked it to my stick and I got the bounce and it went in,” said Myers, who added the Caps had a simple game plan. “We wanted to dictate the pace and make sure we put pucks in behind their D, which we executed very well,” added Myers, the game’s third star. Second-star Darcy Ashley (1-1), Will Johnston and Harrison McIver, who left the game with an injury in the first period, also scored for the Capitals. Willie Whelan, Trevor Carmichael, Nathan DesRoches, Jason Cameron and Chad Earle assisted. Ben MacAskill and Evan Watts answered for Truro (10-1-1-0), which is second behind Woodstock in the league’s overall standings. The teams were tied 1-1 after the opening period and the Caps took a 3-1 advantage into the second intermission. The score remained that way until late in the third period, when Johnston made it a 4-1 game with 5:21 remaining. Overall, the Caps outshot the Bearcats 33-32. Limited quality chances “The boys were keeping the puck down in the other end most of the time, and when it come down (in the Caps’ zone) they were keeping the shots from the outside and made my job easy,” said Dorsey. Capitals head coach Gordie Dwyer said the team has been working hard on its defensive play, but put the win in perspective. “It’s one game going forward here,” said Dwyer. “Tonight was a big challenge for us. I liked the way the guys responded, they played hard and came out with a win.” jpsports@journalpioneer.com |
