Caps snap losing streakSaturday, October 17th 2009 Caps snap losing streak JASON SIMMONDS The Journal Pioneer BRIDGEWATER, N.S. -- The Summerside Western Capitals started off a three-game weekend in the Maritime Junior 'A' Hockey League on a winning note Friday night. Will Johnson scored at 17:31 of the third period to snap a 2-2 tie and lift the Caps to a 3-2 victory over the Bridgewater Lumberjacks. The Capitals visit the Miramichi Timberwolves tonight and host the Dieppe Commandos at Credit Union Place on Sunday at 4 p.m. "It's a big weekend for us," said Capitals head coach Gordie Dwyer before boarding the team bus Friday afternoon. "These games are not going to be easy for us, and we'll have to put in a full 60-minute effort every night." The Capitals improved to 8-5-0-0 (won-lost-overtime losses-shootout losses) and moved into sole possession of second place in the Roger Meek Division, two points ahead of the Timberwolves (7-4-0-0). Big night for Dorsey Before 576 fans at the Bridgewater Arena, Capitals goaltender Paul Dorsey played a big role in the Caps snapping a four-game losing streak. Dorsey stopped 42 of 44 shots sent his way, including 18 of 19 in the middle frame. The Capitals directed 40 at Philip Wright of the Lumberjacks (3-6-3-1). The Capitals' offence received a boost from two affiliate players as Jeremy Jollimore set up Alex Gallant for the game's first goal at 8:11 of the first period. The score remained that way until Paul Taite tied the game for Bridgewater at 17:10 of the second period. Jacob Conrad's power-play goal at 3:41 of the third period gave the Lumberjacks a 2-1 lead, but Chad Earle set Jollimore up for the game-tying goal at 5:13. Trevor Carmichael and Parker Deighan assisted on Johnson's game-winner. The Capitals' penalty killers had a big night, killing off seven of eight Bridgewater power plays. The Caps went 0-for-3 with the man advantage. Referee Jon Langille called nine of 14 minors against the Caps. Minus regulars The Capitals are without three regulars this weekend. Injured defenceman Spencer MacDonald is still a couple of weeks away from returning, forward Jason Gallant suffered a season-ending shoulder injury last weekend and forward Cole MacMillan is playing soccer for the UPEI Panthers. Forward Nick Reilly returns to the lineup from suspension tonight. Despite sweeping a home-and-home series from Dieppe to open the regular season, Dwyer knows the Caps have to be ready Sunday. The Commandos are 4-8-0-0. "Dieppe is going to be a good test," said Dwyer. "They've played really well and have a few additions to their team with Dillen Thériault and Chuckie Schembri, their goaltending has been playing well and they've been playing hard as a team. "I expect a hard-fought game, especially coming in off two road games." |
