Caps Drop Fourth StraightTuesday, October 13th 2009 SUMMERSIDEJASON SIMMONDS The Journal Pioneer Jesse MacIntyre played a leading role in helping the Miramichi Timberwolves cap a perfect weekend in the Maritime Junior ‘A’ Hockey League. The centre from Mill River East scored two of three goals during a 3:05 stretch in the second period that proved to be the difference in Sunday’s 4-3 victory over the slumping Summerside Western Capitals, losers of four straight. “It’s a huge win and they were two points ahead of us going into this game,” said the 19-year-old MacIntyre, who also added an assist to improve his season totals to six goals and seven assists in 11 games. “Now we’re tied with them (Capitals), but we have a game-in-hand. “It was a big performance by us and a big weekend. We got six points out of a possible six points.” The Timberwolves, coached by Charlottetown native Billy McGuigan, beat Halifax 3-1 on Thursday and Yarmouth 3-1 on Saturday. “They’re a team that plays hard and obviously we’re a young team and here to compete hard,” said Capitals head coach Gordie Dwyer. “They outworked us today (Sunday) for parts of the game and it cost us. “We came back in the third period and made a good game out of it, but it was too little too late.” Dwyer said the key for the Capitals is hard work and getting back to basics. “Games are always harder to win when you are on a losing streak than winning them on a winning streak,” added Dwyer. Early lead Before 772 fans, Jason Cameron (3:29) and Will Johnson (4:04) staked the Caps to a 2-0 first-period lead. Dawson Campbell’s power-play goal got Miramichi on the board at 7:53. The score remained 2-1 until MacIntyre tied the game 2-2 at 13:53 of the second period. “The second goal was a result of a good play by (Matt) Milson,” said MacIntyre, who also took numerous key faceoffs deep in the Miramichi zone in the third period. “Nathan (McQuaid) passed it to Milson and he skated back to me. I kind of went cross-crease and then top corner.” Kris Keating gave Miramichi a 3-2 lead at 14:49, and MacIntyre made it 4-2 at 16:58. “Nathan McQuaid and Matt Milson, my two linemates, were working the puck in by the goalie,” explained MacIntyre. “It kind of squirted out to me at the side of the net, and I just put it up over the goalie’s blocker.” Lance Pridham made it a 4-3 game with 17:09 remaining, banging his own rebound past Miramichi goaltender Luke Gallant on the short side. But despite outshooting Miramichi 13-4 in the third period, the Caps could not get the equalizer by Gallant, who is from the Charlottetown area. Gallant finished with 39 saves and stopped 104 of 109 shots in Miramichi’s three wins. |
