SUMMERSIDE — It was a productive 24 hours for the Summerside Western Capitals’ line of Darcy Ashley, Trevor Carmichael and Harrison McIver.
They combined for 12 points in a 5-1 win over the Yarmouth Mariners as part of the Maritime Junior ‘A’ Hockey League Showcase at Credit Union Place on Friday night, after combining for 11 points in a 7-3 win at Pictou County on Thursday.
“It’s a lot of fun,” said the 16-year-old Ashley, the fourth overall selection by the Caps in last spring’s MJAHL Entry Draft out of the Cornwall Thunder major midget program. “I’m playing with great linemates and that makes the adjustment a lot easier.
“With a new coach (Gordie Dwyer) coming in, he’s doing a wonderful job and has given me a chance to play, which is a big part of how I’ve been playing so far.”
In earlier games, the Bridgewater Lumberjacks doubled the Miramichi Timberwolves 4-2 and the Truro Bearcats topped the Dieppe Commandos 2-0.
The Showcase features all 11 teams playing two league games that count in the league standings. Games are two 25-minute stop-time periods.
Against Yarmouth, Carmichael had two goals and two assists while Ashley and McIver each scored once and helped set up three others. Rookie Matt Myers also scored for the Capitals, who have won three games in a row and improved their league-leading record to 7-1-0-0 (won-lost-overtime losses-shootout losses).
“We work well as a team and everybody seems to be contributing, which is definitely a key to our success,” said Ashley, who’s from Brooklyn and leads the league-scoring race with 24 points (10-14).
Davey Shea was the lone Mariner to beat Capitals goaltender Paul Dorsey, who finished with 28 saves. The Capitals fired 30 shots at Yarmouth’s Charles Grant.

Key point
A key point in the game, with the teams tied 1-1, was the Capitals killing off a four-minute Yarmouth power play that overlapped into the second period and included a two-man advantage for the final 1:27 of the opening period and the first 33 seconds of the second.
Just after the teams returned to even strength, Ashley and Nathan DesRoches set up Myers for a highlight-reel goal to give the Caps the lead for good. After some give-and-go passing, Ashley set Myers up to the left of Grant and he made no mistake scoring low along the ice.

Lumberjacks 4 Timberwolves 2
Mickey MacDonald’s goal at 21:20 of the second period gave Bridgewater a 3-1 lead.
Jordan Burke (1-1), Jacob Conrad and Matt Snow also scored for the Lumberjacks (2-2-3-1).
Chris Owens and Jesse MacIntyre of Mill River East, with his fourth goal of the season, replied for the Timberwolves (4-3-0-0).
Bridgewater outshot Miramichi 26-24. Philip Wright earned the goaltending win and Jonathan McKinnon took the loss.

Bearcats 2 Commandos 0
Travis Moore’s two second-period goals at 15:10 and 17:21, along with Kirk Rafuse’s 10-save shutout, lifted the Bearcats (5-0-0-0).
Truro directed 25 shots at Mario Babineau in goal for Dieppe (1-7-0-0).
