Capitals overcome four-goal defecit to top TigresSaturday, September 26th 2009 Caps overcome four-goal deficit vs. Tigers JASON SIMMONDS The Journal Pioneer CAMPBELLTON, N.B. -- The Summerside Western Capitals proved Friday night that momentum in junior hockey can shift very quickly. The Capitals trailed the Campbellton Tigers 4-0 early in the third period before rallying to tie the game 4-4 before the end of regulation time. After a scoreless five-minute overtime period, Nathan DesRoches scored the only goal and rookie goaltender Jared Kelly was perfect during the three-man shootout as the Capitals escaped with a 5-4 win. The Capitals improved their Maritime Junior 'A' Hockey League record to 4-1-0-0 (won-lost-overtime losses-shootout losses). Chad Earle (7:50), Trevor Carmichael (9:01), Darcy Ashley (10:10) and Harrison McIver (15:28) also scored for the Capitals, who received three assists from Daniel Whelan and two from Spencer MacDonald. Brad Badger, Grant West, Brett Bernard and Nick Cyr replied for the Tigers (1-2-1-1). Jason Smallman, who is from the O'Leary area, earned an assist for Campbellton. After a scoreless first period, the Tigers took a 3-0 lead into the second intermission. Overall, the Caps held a 45-30 shots-on-goal advantage. Samuel Renault was Campbellton's goaltender. The Tigers were assessed six of the game's 10 minor penalties. Each team picked up one fighting major. The Capitals' next game is against the Jim Bottomley-coached Bridgewater Lumberjacks (1-0-3-1). The opening faceoff at Credit Union Place on Sunday is set for 4 p.m. |
