Caps off to 2-0 StartFriday, September 18th 2009 Caps off to 2-0 start Defeat Commandos 7-2; head to Woodstock tonight The Journal Pioneer DIEPPE, N.B. -- The Summerside Western Capitals are off to a 2-0 (won-lost) start to the 2009-10 Maritime Junior 'A' Hockey League regular season. The Capitals defeated the Dieppe Commandos 7-2 on Thursday night to sweep a home-and-home series between last year's Fred Page Cup Eastern Canadian junior 'A' hockey championship finalists. The Caps doubled the Commandos 10-5 in Summerside on Sunday. The Capitals are back on the road today travelling to Woodstock for a 7:30 p.m. start against the Slammers. Before 340 fans at the Arthur J. LeBlanc Arena, the Capitals jumped out to a 1-0 lead after one period and increased that margin to 5-1 following 40 minutes. Chad Earle (2-1), rookie Darcy Ashley (1-2) and Harrison McIver (1-2) all had three points to lead the Capitals. Earle's second goal came on a second-period penalty shot. Neil Sherren (1-1), Lance Pridham and Cole MacMillan also scored for the Capitals, who were 0-for-4 with the man advantage. Trevor Carmichael (2), Will Johnson, Nick Reilly, Nathan DesRoches and Jason Gallant added assists. Ryan MacDonald had both goals for Dieppe, which went 1-for-5 on the power play. Josh Carter and Marc Roper chipped in with single helpers. Rookie goaltender Jared Kelly made his regular-season start in a Caps' uniform a winning one, turning aside 21 of 23 shots. Dieppe goaltender Mario Babineau stopped 37 of 44 shots. Referee Guy Pellerin called five minors, two fighting majors and one 10-minute misconduct against the Capitals.
