Former Caps' Captain Signs Pro Contract

  SUMMERSIDE — Brett Gallant of Summerside has signed with the Elmira Jackals of the East Coast Hockey League for the 2009-10 season.
Gallant, who captained the Summerside Western Capitals of the Maritime Junior ‘A’ Hockey League last season, will be leaving for an American Hockey League tryout with the Binghamton Senators on Sept. 16. Binghamton and Elmira are affiliates of the National Hockey League’s Ottawa Senators.
Last season, the 20-year-old Gallant was third on the Caps in scoring with 73 points, including 24 goals, in 50 games. The six-foot and 185-pound left-winger also recorded 235 penalty minutes.
“Brett Gallant is a very tough and entertaining player and proved last year, that when given the opportunity, he can also produce offensively,” commented Jackals head coach Steve Martinson in a media release.
Prior to joining the Capitals, Gallant played three seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with Saint John, where he totalled 439 penalty minutes in 131 games. He led the team in that statistic the last two seasons he was with the Sea Dogs.
Brett is the son of Mike (Pinky) and Patricia Gallant.
